With all of the finacial and economic turmoil that gripped this nation in 2007 – 2008, I found myself wondering, by the end of 2008, just what we were going to do.
In the last week of January 2009, with some good advice of my wife (a native Texan), we packed up and left our home under The Big Sky, and struck out for the Land of the Lone Star.
I’ve been in the home construction industry for years .. and my wife assured me that they were always building something in Texas .. rain or shine .. come hell or high water .. Texas was always building .. of that, I could be sure.
I never looked at Texas as being anything more than just another state in the union. Sure — I had been to Texas — once — back in 1980 — just passin’ through — so I figured I might have had a handle on just what I might expect once I got here.
Upon after living in Montana for 40+ some odd years, I found that being able to pour concrete in the middle of February was quite the treat in Texas. Working year round in my industry was something new — something exciting — something down right frakkin’ sweet.
Back in the day, when I was first married to my dear wife, I remember us getting the digital Christmas cards from the then Texas Governor George Bush — So Rick Perry’s name has been around a while in our lives –
Coming from the land of Marc Racicot –Â (Governor of Montana from 1993 until 2001), Texas didn’t seem to be all that much of a change. If it hadn’t had been for the Montana term limits, I’m pretty sure that Marc would have been a 3 term Governor as well — Yes, he was indeed that well liked and that popular.
Texas was a top pick because my dear wife is from here. I could have gone anywhere in the nation with what I do and made money (just as long as it was Texas, according to my wife) –
The wages may or may not be low here. My first year here was a bit of a stretch in that I wasn’t making the money I had been making in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Idaho, and Montana) .. but hey — we were in the grips of recession, right?
These days however, it’s a different story. Monitary circimstances are such that rival anything I might have done in the Pacific Northwest — A Texas Miracle? — Maybe. But then again, one might want be careful to stop and consider that wages are a relative term based according to one’s own mindset. I look at the numbers, and compare, and conclude that, yes, Montana could have never produced the monitary circumstances that might exist for us here in Texas, even on it’s best days, and in the best of economies.
With the price of fuel and groceries as high as they are, I firmly beleive that we are still in a recession — and if this is recession in Texas, I can just imagine how bad it is for everyone else in the nation.
My point? — How about we just all gang up and put Rick Perry into the White House — I mean, what could it possibly hurt — to have the rest of the nation experience “The Texas Miracle“.
I’ll read articles like this one;
Some call this the “Texas Miracle.” But with Perry as governor, the state has added hundreds of thousands more jobs than any state by far. And in a country desperate for jobs, this issue — and Perry’s claim that he deserves the credit — sets him apart. ~ CBS News
Or this one;
With a big “Howdy” and a hardscrabble life story, Rick Perry introduces himself to the rest of the nation. ~ The Houston Chronicle
… and I’ll have absolutely no doubt that this all has to do with the leadership style and governing skill of people like Rick Perry.
I might not ever have the Texas twang, or the laid back Y’all in my vernacular, but please do, take it from someone that isn’t from Texas — The Texas Miracle does exist.
How do I know this? Well, that’s an easy one — I’m living it — and in Texas while I’m at it.
Galveston County will have completed repairing or rebuilding most of its 625 homes by Sept. 30, but the city is a long way from completing its 1,033.
Fattig said a congressional appropriation is required for renewal of the $5 million disaster grant that was also used to provide families with a place to stay while their houses are rebuilt and to store their goods.
Grandson’s only income is a $1,000 monthly Social Security check. She says she can’t afford to furnish her house when it is rebuilt. “I had a washer and a dryer, but everything is gone,” Grandson said. “My clothes, my house — everything.”
As of July 1, the city had repaired or rebuilt 38 houses since Camp, Dresser and McKee received a contract to handle the work nearly two years ago.
The process is mired in federal and state-required paperwork, said Siefert, a CDM employee. The biggest obstacle is the requirement that homes be inspected first by the city and state historical commissions.
Siefert said 937 of the 1,217 active applications had to be sent to the Texas Historical Commission for approval. Of those, 425 were deemed “historically eligible,” meaning that all plans had to be approved by the Historical Commission.

Despite beer’s bad reputation, it actually has a number of natural antioxidants and vitamins that can help prevent heart disease and even rebuild muscle. It also has one of the highest energy contents of any food or drink. Of course, this means you need to set limits – one beer gets you going, four makes you fat.
If you’re worried about dehydration, keep in mind that beer is 93 percent water. Also, according to a Spanish study, beer may actually provide better hydration than H2O alone when you’re sweating it out under the sun.
So with all of this in mind, which kind of beer should you reach for? Calorie-wise, you may be tempted to grab a light lager, but for health benefits, a dark beer is the better choice.
Dark beers tend to have the most antioxidants, which help reverse cellular damage that occurs naturally in the body. A recent study published in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture has also found that …

Rafferty drew a clear distinction between the artistic integrity of a musician, on the one hand, and the music industry’s need to create celebrities and sell products, on the other.
In an interview with Colin Irwin in 1988, he said: “There’s a thin line between being a songwriter and a singer and being a personality… If you feel uncomfortable with it you shouldn’t do it. It’s not for me – there are too many inherent contradictions.”
Two decades later, speaking to the press after Rafferty’s funeral, Charlie Reid of The Proclaimers confirmed Rafferty’s dislike of celebrity: “He was not entirely comfortable with fame. Even more so than most people who work in this business, he saw it as not a good thing”.
Reid believed Rafferty was fundamentally unsuited to the pressures of celebrity: “He struck me as a very, very sensitive man and for someone like that, fame was probably not appropriate.
